Electrical stimulation can be used as part of a therapy session but it can also be set up so that you can exercise with it at home. Electrical stimulation helps you get a lot of practice, which we know is important to drive motor recovery. It is relatively simple to use but we recommend you are shown how to get the best from this device by a registered physio. Once set up its simple to use at home. Mirror therapy that is added to rehabilitation has been shown to result in a greater improvement of movement and function of the weak arm or foot after stroke. There is good evidence that the parts of the brain active during movement are also active during watching the movement in a mirror, which can make the brain more excitable – this is an important factor for recovery of movement.
Mirror therapy is achieved by placing your arm affected by the stroke into a mirror box with your other arm facing the mirror and then performing some exercises with your stronger side. The image of your unaffected arm moving gives you the illusion of movement of your weak arm. The advantage of this type of therapy is that it can be used even if you have very little movement of the weak side, it can be customised to your particular needs and it is easy to do the exercises by yourself at home.
